james fenimore cooper, an early american writer, once said, "the americans are almost ignorant of the art of music." if that was once true, you would never know it today. most americans——even those without a musical bone in their bodies——have a favorite style of music. many people enjoy classical and folk music from around the world. but other popular music styles in america were "made in the u.s.a."

country and western music lies close to the heart of many americans. this style originated among country folks in the southern and western united states. country music tells down-to-earth stories about love and life's hardships. guitars, banjos and violins——also known as fiddles——give country music its characteristic sound. the home of country music is nashville, tennessee——music city u.s.a. country music even has its own theme park called "opryland" where you can enjoy music shows and fun rides. "the grand ole opry," the oldest radio show in the united states, broadcasts country music live from opryland every weekend.

jazz music, developed by african-americans in the late 1800s, allows performers to freely express their emotions and musical skill. instead of just playing the melody, jazz musicians improvise different tunes using the same chords. the peak of jazz music came in the 1920s, known as "the jazz era." this period produced musicians like louis armstrong, benny goodman and duke ellington. these musicians later created the "big band" sounds of the 1930s. different styles of jazz developed in different cities, such as new orleans, chicago, new york and kansas city. composer george gershwin brought jazz into the world of classical music with pieces like "rhapsody in blue."

it is quite common for parents to beat their children, because they think eating is a good way to make children learn and behave well.one of my neighbors made a very strict demand on his son and scolded him bitterly or smacked(稍带特定味道) him whenever he was lazy or disobedient(违抗命令的).to justify(辩解) what he did,he said,” spare the rod and ruin the child.”

actually beating is a violent way of treating children.it does more harm and causes more hurt than good to children’s physical and psychological health.however, beating children is common occurrence(出现) in our life.many children become disable because their parents hit them too hard.some lost their hearing and some became lame(跛脚的).some children develop an internal(内在的) hatred(憎恨) for their parents and protest(抗议) by running away from home.others may become so fearful of their parents that they tremble(发抖) at the sight of their angry parents.a mother, for example, even went so far as to beat her son to death because she was not satisfied with his study.likewise(同样地),it is not unusual that the child murdered(凶杀) his parents because of the extreme contradiction(矛盾) between them.how can children learn and grow healthily under such circumstance(环境)?

quite often parents will be torn by pangs(剧痛) of regret(懊悔) and remorse(自责) after they have beaten their children.they feel very sad in the rest of their lives.but it is already too late.how can they bring their handicapped(有生理缺陷的) child back to healthy one?how can they relieve(减轻) pains in their children’s heart so easily?we can say beating hurts both children and parents.it is absolutely a bad way to make children learn and behave well.

exactly speaking, children are also human beings.they have self-respect and should be respected.

three hundred years ago,the emigrants from england arrived at maryland acrossing the atlantic by "may flower" to search for a "pure"land for the puritans to live.since then american dream has come up.america gives every person all over the world equal rights.people can achieve their dreams by hardworking.

three hundred years later, this country has become a rich state.however, american dream doesn't fade away.with the development of the history,it has many meanings today.what is the american dream?different people hold different interpretations.but at any rate, american dream contains several factors below:america offers every person an opportunity to succeed;success depends on one's ability and effort regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position;every person has equal rights;every person has free belief.

when it comes to the 21st century-the information age, bill gates's success indicated that only if you have wisdom and talent, you can succeed in america.but american dream has changed, compared with its original meanings.what's the true motivation behind american dream?some historians considered it the thirst for wealth .pursuing money is the eternal theme ofamerican dream.however, the over pursuit of wealth makes american dream turn bad and lost its attraction to people worldwide gradually.

as the changes of the times, the influence of american dream may become less and less.an increasing number of people confess to having lost faith in the american dream.

high school is a very important stage for students around the world. chinese students spend a lot of time studying and they think it is the hardest stage for them. but when we look at the high school in america, students feel much easier. people believe that study in america is an easy thing.

when we look at the screen, the school atmosphere is so lively. high school students always hang out with friends and take part in all kinds of parties, which seems that they don’t need to worry about their study. when we see this, we feel envious. how nice it would be if our school life is like this?

actually, what we know about the american teenagers’ life is not true for all. some high school students know they will not go to college and choose to enjoy the school life. while for some students who want to fight for the top college, they need to study very hard. at the same time, they also need to take part in some activities to cater for the college’s permission. so don’t be misled by the superficial phenomenon.
